The CourseThe University of Lincoln is the largest centre for the study of Conservation in the UK, with over 40 years experience teaching students about the practice.
The course offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of historic materials provided by museums, historic houses and private collections, allowing extensive hands-on experience. This helps the students to gain both a practical and analytical understanding of the materials and processes involved. Students undertaking the course also carry out work placements, helping them to gain onsite experience within the sector. Artefacts can vary from both ethnographical items, to ceramics, decorative arts and preventative conservation allowing for a broad and extensive knowledge base. In addition to this, students have the opportunity to work with the universities scientific equipment such as a laser and 3D scanner, X-radiography, FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive X-ray, thus helping them to gain a better understanding of the artefacts they are conserving.
